Sunset Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea is set to celebrate a century of its cultural legacy with a significant community event on October 25, 2026. This date marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Sunset School, the original campus building. The celebration, titled “Century of Creativity | 1926–2031,” will also kick off a five-year campaign leading up to 2031, when the center will commemorate 100 years since the opening of its historic theater auditorium.
The commemorative event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., featuring a variety of activities such as live performances, visual art displays, historical exhibits, and guided tours. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy performances by cultural groups like the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, and Carmel Music Society, among others, in the venue’s 718-seat historic theater and on the outdoor terrace between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
Additional activities will engage the community through the Sunset Legacy Wall, an interactive art project where visitors can contribute artwork and memories to celebrate the center’s impact. Families and children can participate in creative endeavors like rock painting. The event will also host live art demonstrations, music and photography programs, oral-history collections, and wellness activities. Guided tours will offer insights into the transformation of the school campus into a regional cultural hub.
The celebration is a collaborative effort involving local organizations such as the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, and The Carmel Foundation. An exhibition will chronicle the evolution of Sunset Center from its educational roots to its current status as a cultural centerpiece. Complimentary refreshments will be available to guests, with additional food and beverages for purchase through Sunset Center concessions.
