US President Donald Trump has called on Libya to strengthen its border controls, urging the nation to prevent its territory from being used as a transit route for illegal migration across the Mediterranean. In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the importance of collaboration between the United States and Libya to address this issue, noting the need for immediate action.
Trump praised the resilience and hospitality of the Libyan people, highlighting the longstanding partnership between the two countries in combating terrorism and their joint efforts in the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS). He underscored the importance of continued cooperation to tackle security challenges facing Libya.
The US president also expressed support for Libya’s political transition, advocating for the unification of state institutions, stronger governance, and the holding of long-delayed national elections. Libya has been embroiled in political divisions and power struggles since the 2011 overthrow of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, with rival factions vying for control.
Trump further called on Libyan political factions to set aside their differences and resist foreign interference in the nation’s internal affairs. He emphasized that the Libyan people deserve sovereignty, stability, and a prosperous future.
These remarks reflect Washington’s focus on migration management, counterterrorism cooperation, and political stability in Libya, highlighting the broader strategic interests of the United States in the North African region.
