Michigan Land Conservancy Receives 1.15 MW Storage System from Advanced Battery Concepts

Must read

The U.S. Department of Energy has granted final funding approval for an ambitious energy storage project at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) in Traverse City, Michigan. This development paves the way for the installation of a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system at GTRLC’s headquarters, designed to complement its existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic array.

Led by Michigan-based Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), the project aims to enhance energy resilience by storing electricity generated from solar power for use when needed. The initiative is backed by Congressionally Directed Spending and administered by the Department of Energy, underscoring the federal commitment to advancing renewable energy projects.

The storage system will employ ABC’s innovative GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology, noted for its reduced lead content compared to traditional lead-based batteries. Despite using less lead, these batteries maintain the safety and recyclability that characterize lead battery chemistry. The technology is developed and manufactured in Michigan, highlighting the state’s growing role in the domestic energy storage supply chain.

With funding secured, the project has entered its procurement and manufacturing phase, with plans for installation and commissioning set for the second quarter of 2027. The use of three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures will facilitate the practical deployment of this advanced battery system.
