Amazon’s Ring is set to introduce its Neighbours community app in the United Kingdom on October 21, expanding from its presence in the United States while addressing privacy concerns that have arisen over police access to camera footage. The app, integrated into the existing Ring platform, will allow UK residents to share safety updates, community information, and lost pet alerts, without needing to own a Ring device.
The Neighbours app aims to provide a streamlined alternative to larger neighborhood groups found on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. Users can customize their engagement by setting their address and choosing a community radius ranging from 0.1 to five miles, enabling more localized interactions. Posts will be categorized and moderated by a combination of artificial intelligence and human oversight to ensure compliance with guidelines that prohibit illegal content, discrimination, and speculation.
Some features available in the US version of the Neighbours app will not be immediately available in the UK. These include functionalities that allow organizations such as fire departments to post alerts and options for police to request footage from Ring cameras for specific incidents. Ring is considering introducing these options in the UK at a later date.
Concerns about user privacy have been prominent in discussions about Ring’s services in the US, particularly regarding the access law enforcement agencies have to camera footage. In response, Ring has implemented measures to enhance user control over recordings, including the introduction of a default encryption system called TAKE. This system uses time-limited keys to secure video recordings, preventing access by Ring or other parties once the key expires, unless user consent is given.
In addition to the Neighbours app, Ring will also launch a feature called Search Party for Dogs, which will enable users to report missing dogs through photographs and details. Owners of Ring cameras who have eligible cloud subscriptions can opt to receive alerts if their devices potentially capture footage of a missing pet, with the option to share this footage with the pet’s owner.
Since its acquisition by Amazon in 2018, Ring has been a significant player in the smart-home security sector but has faced scrutiny regarding privacy and the handling of camera footage. The UK roll-out of the Neighbours app marks another step in Ring’s strategy to expand its community engagement features internationally while maintaining a focus on user privacy and security.
