Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, US negotiators, made a visit to Kyiv on Sunday to engage in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aiming to make strides toward resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. This meeting came on the heels of their engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day. Witkoff described the talks with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” expressing optimism about the potential for broader dialogues that could soon include the US, Ukraine, and European nations.
National security advisers from the UK, France, and Germany briefly joined the discussions in Kyiv. President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s interest in pursuing trilateral talks with the United States and European allies to further peace negotiations. He also called for sustained Western support as Ukraine braces for another challenging winter, highlighting critical needs such as air defense, energy assistance, and increased supplies of US liquefied natural gas.
Despite ongoing efforts for peace, major disagreements, especially regarding the control of eastern Ukrainian territories, have hindered progress in negotiations. Previous discussions have focused on a 20-point peace framework devised by Washington and Kyiv, but key issues remain unresolved between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian military actions persist, with Ukrainian officials reporting at least eight fatalities and 69 injuries nationwide over the past day. Kyiv continues to face persistent drone assaults and is currently experiencing a shortage of US-manufactured Patriot interceptor missiles. As the conflict nears its fifth year, Ukrainian authorities express concern over potential escalations in Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, particularly as winter approaches.
