President Donald Trump has launched a new initiative, the “Super Intelligence Force,” to address the risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This task force will be led by National Intelligence Director Jay Clayton and is tasked with coordinating federal AI policy to ensure the United States remains at the forefront of technological innovation while safeguarding national security.
The group will focus on identifying potential AI-related risks across various sectors, including financial services, energy, transportation, agriculture, and emergency services. Its mandate also extends to critical areas such as cybersecurity, biosecurity, water infrastructure, civil liberties, and the development of safeguards for advanced AI systems. Federal agencies expected to contribute to the task force’s efforts include the Pentagon, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Trade Commission.
According to the task force’s charter, members will have 120 days to present recommendations to President Trump. These recommendations will address AI risks, establish security standards, and consider the implications of over-regulation. Additionally, the task force may explore the necessity for AI laboratories to report security breaches, hacking incidents, and any attempts to bypass system safeguards.
Key figures in the task force include FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, and Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor as vice chairs. Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are also members, with former AI advisor David Sacks and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice participating as external advisors.
Despite the administration’s efforts, the initiative has faced criticism from Democratic lawmakers who question the ability of the task force to implement enforceable protections without legislative action. The Trump administration, however, maintains that their approach to AI oversight seeks to balance security and public safety concerns with the need to avoid stifling technological growth.
