Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has countered U.S. President Donald Trump’s critiques of Mexico’s strategies against drug trafficking and organized crime, asserting that Mexico is actively addressing these challenges. In a recent press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s accountability for its domestic issues, advocating for a broader focus on the United States’ role in the cross-border drug crisis.
Sheinbaum highlighted the shared responsibility between the two nations in tackling drug trafficking, pointing out the illegal arms flow from the U.S. that empowers criminal organizations in Mexico. She challenged the United States to intensify efforts against domestic drug consumption, particularly the opioid crisis, and to curb the illegal trade of firearms and money laundering activities.
The Mexican president defended her administration’s track record, citing various anti-corruption measures and law enforcement operations, including Operation Swarm, which targets criminal networks. She reiterated that Mexican authorities prosecute officials with cartel links when sufficient evidence is available, regardless of their political ties.
Trump’s administration has previously called on Mexico to ramp up efforts against officials allegedly connected to drug cartels and praised certain accomplishments like arrests and prosecutions. However, Sheinbaum urged greater transparency from the U.S. regarding its initiatives to combat fentanyl trafficking and substance abuse.
