California and New York have initiated lawsuits against the Trump administration, challenging its decision to buy back offshore wind leases and halt renewable energy projects. The legal actions argue that these moves could jeopardize clean-energy initiatives and escalate electricity costs.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed a lawsuit concerning the cancellation of an offshore wind project by Chicago-based Invenergy, which was set to be developed off the California coast. This follows a federal announcement to repurchase leases for four offshore wind projects across the U.S. East and West coasts.
In a parallel effort, New York Attorney General Letitia James is spearheading a coalition of states in opposing agreements that involve Invenergy and Bluepoint Wind. These agreements reportedly offer payments to energy companies to terminate offshore wind projects that are currently in progress.
The Trump administration has allocated billions of dollars to encourage companies to abandon renewable energy endeavors. The Interior Department has defended these buyback agreements, suggesting that firms are redirecting their investments towards fossil fuels and other energy sources deemed more reliable.
James criticized the agreements as unlawful, warning that the cancellation of wind projects could hinder states’ abilities to meet growing electricity demands. Similarly, Bonta emphasized California’s dedication to pursuing clean-energy projects, regardless of the federal policy shift.
The lawsuits underscore a growing conflict between the Trump administration and several states over the direction of offshore wind development and the broader U.S. energy transition.
