Meta has consented to implement significant alterations to its Facebook and Instagram platforms following a settlement with California and 28 other U.S. states. This agreement addresses allegations that the company’s platforms contributed to harmful and addictive behaviors among teenagers. As part of the settlement, Meta is set to introduce enhanced protective measures for teenage users nationwide. These measures include setting daily usage limits, restricting notifications during school hours, and limiting overnight access to its applications. Additionally, the company plans to curb the availability of certain plastic surgery filters targeted at young users.
The settlement, if approved by the court, might require Meta to pay up to $18 billion, with the funds to be distributed among the participating states over a decade. California is projected to receive between $1.5 billion and $2.1 billion, while Colorado could receive approximately $615 million. The states had accused Meta of intentionally designing features that prompted young users to spend excessive time on its platforms. They further claimed that the company collected data from children under 13 without obtaining proper parental consent.
Despite the settlement, Meta has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the agreement’s effectiveness would be heightened if other major social media platforms adopted similar safety measures. The company specifically called on TikTok, Snap, and YouTube to implement comparable protections for young users. This move is part of a broader context where Meta and other social media giants are facing numerous lawsuits filed by families, schools, and government officials, all concerning alleged harms associated with social media use among children and teenagers.
The agreement marks a significant step as the social media landscape continues to face scrutiny over its impact on younger audiences. With the ongoing legal pressures, the settlement could potentially influence how other platforms address similar issues, prompting a closer examination of their policies regarding young users. As Meta navigates this challenging environment, the focus on safeguarding teenage users becomes an increasingly pivotal aspect of its operations, reflecting a broader societal concern about the influence of social media on youth.
