In a collaborative effort to propel Selma into a more digitally advanced and economically robust future, the Selma Housing Authority, Metro Digital Group, and a coalition of educational and civic leaders have unveiled plans for the Selma Digital Innovation Center. This transformative initiative aims to convert a historic building at 528 Washington Avenue into a hub of innovation focused on workforce development, entrepreneurship, technology, AI, and the creator economy, benefiting students, young adults, entrepreneurs, and the broader community.
Collins Pettaway Jr., President of Progress Partners for Selma, emphasized that the initiative is far more than a mere building redevelopment. “We are creating future opportunity infrastructure for our community,” he stated, highlighting the need for Selma to adapt to a rapidly evolving digital economy. The project is a public-private partnership involving the Mayor’s Office, the Housing Authority of Selma, Selma City Schools, Selma University, Wallace Community College Selma, Progress Partners, and Metro Digital Group.
Shaon Berry, President of Metro Digital Group, expressed honor in partnering with local entities on the project, which aligns with Metro’s mission to establish inclusive innovation ecosystems that foster long-term economic mobility and workforce readiness. The center will feature environments for gaming and esports, creator and streaming studios, AI and STEM labs, workforce development classrooms, media production spaces, entrepreneurship programs, and community event areas, serving as a next-generation Digital Innovation Center.
The symbolic significance of this project for Selma is underscored by local leaders as the city seeks to advance economic development, education, and community revitalization. “The future of Selma depends on partnerships like this,” said Selma Councilwoman Lesia James, acknowledging the collaborative effort to create unprecedented opportunities for youth and residents. John Deamer, Vice President of Progress Partners, noted that the center is designed to meet people where they are and expose them to industries and career paths of the future, aiming to remove traditional barriers to learning and opportunity.
Scheduled to begin design and construction planning in June 2026, with an opening anticipated in 2027, the Selma Digital Innovation Center is currently in the phase of engaging strategic partners and sponsors. Roger Blackmon, Progress Partners Director of Technology, expressed enthusiasm about the technology and dynamic design of the center, which aims to excite learners of all ages and create a shared learning environment for families. Established in November 2025, Progress Partners for Selma is dedicated to driving sustainable economic development, education, and community pride through committed local and regional leadership.
