US and India Near Completion of Trade Agreement, Says Secretary of State Rubio

Must read

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States is nearing the completion of a trade agreement with India, a development that could influence decisions on national security waivers linked to Russian energy sanctions. Rubio made this statement while speaking in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, highlighting the ongoing negotiations as a significant factor in these considerations.

During his address, Rubio noted the challenges faced by countries in shifting from Russian energy sources amidst high global energy prices. He acknowledged that geographical and logistical constraints make it difficult for nations like India, a major purchaser of Russian energy, to rapidly diversify their energy imports. This context has led to the US decision to temporarily waive certain sanctions on Russian energy, though Rubio emphasized these waivers are not permanent and could be re-evaluated.

As part of the efforts to conclude the trade agreement, Rubio is scheduled to visit India, where he will meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai. Meanwhile, India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that the initial phase of the bilateral trade agreement has been finalized and is currently undergoing legal drafting. Both nations are working towards finalizing the agreement to make it operational.

The tentative trade deal and temporary sanction waivers reflect the intricate balance between economic partnerships and geopolitical strategies. The US aims to support its allies in transitioning away from Russian energy while strengthening bilateral trade ties with India.
