As Malaysia faces a 10% tariff imposed by the United States on its goods, industry expert Datuk Seri R. Jeyenderan has cautioned that this rate might not be the upper limit. He highlighted the possibility of Washington implementing further measures if it finds Malaysia’s response to concerns regarding structural excess capacity and transshipment controls unsatisfactory. This warning comes as the US continues its investigation into these issues, urging Malaysian exporters to proceed with caution during this period.
To address these concerns, Jeyenderan has called on the Malaysian Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) and Customs Department to take proactive steps. He emphasized the importance of compiling verified industry data, enhancing cargo traceability, and ensuring that trade and labor regulations are effectively enforced. These measures are crucial to demonstrate Malaysia’s commitment to addressing the issues raised by the US investigation.
Particular emphasis was placed on the need for robust transshipment controls. Jeyenderan stressed that it is vital to prove that goods marked as originating from Malaysia are genuinely produced within the country, rather than being rerouted through Malaysia from other regions. This proof is essential to maintain credibility with the United States and avoid further complications in trade relations.
Additionally, Jeyenderan urged Malaysian authorities to provide clear guidelines on the handling of petroleum cargo. This includes rules on storage, blending, declarations, and tax treatments. By reducing uncertainties for businesses, Malaysia can better position itself during the ongoing investigation and demonstrate compliance with international trade standards.
Jeyenderan emphasized that any weaknesses identified in the investigation should be addressed promptly and transparently. Malaysia must not only have adequate trade regulations in place but also ensure they are properly implemented, monitored, and enforced.
