US President Donald Trump has announced a significant development project in eastern Iowa: a $15 billion steel plant that is being touted as the largest of its kind in American history. The facility will be developed by Mesabi Metallics, a steel company owned by the India-based Essar Group. Construction is underway, with the plant expected to commence production by 2030.
The plant is set to use iron ore sourced from Mesabi Metallics’ mine in Minnesota to produce high-quality steel for the US market. This initiative is projected to create up to 6,000 construction jobs and nearly 2,000 permanent manufacturing and mining jobs. The project is receiving substantial federal backing, with the US Export-Import Bank providing up to $10 billion in financing.
Rewant Ruia, the chairman of Mesabi Metallics, stated that while most critical materials will be sourced domestically, some specialized materials may need to be imported. The announcement comes as part of the broader strategy credited by President Trump to his administration’s tariffs on imported goods, which he claims have encouraged companies to invest in domestic manufacturing.
