Trump’s War on Iran Is Now the Defining Test of His Second Term

Must read

President Donald Trump has fought many battles in his political career, but the US-Israeli offensive against Iran is something different: a military campaign of historic ambition that will define his second term and potentially his entire legacy. If Iran’s government collapses and is replaced by something more compatible with American interests, Trump will be remembered as the president who achieved what decades of American policy could not. If the campaign fails, the costs — in lives, treasure, and American standing — will be immense and lasting.
The military power deployed in service of that legacy has been extraordinary. American B-2 stealth bombers have struck Iran’s buried ballistic missile infrastructure with dozens of 2,000-pound penetrating munitions. A large Iranian naval vessel has been hit and possibly destroyed. Israel has issued mass evacuation orders in Lebanon covering over one million people, striking Hezbollah’s command infrastructure across Beirut. The defense secretary has promised a dramatic surge in US firepower. The IDF chief has promised new phases and undisclosed operations.
The costs of the campaign so far have already been substantial. More than 1,230 Iranians have been killed. Six American soldiers have died. Lebanon has counted over 200 dead and nearly 800 wounded. An airstrike on a girls’ school killed more than 100 students, with US investigators now believing American forces were likely responsible. Over one million Lebanese are displaced. Iran’s internet is at approximately 1% capacity. Global oil prices have risen, flights have been cancelled, and markets have been volatile.
Trump has framed all of these costs as necessary and acceptable in pursuit of his stated objectives: regime change in Iran, unconditional surrender, and a new Iranian leadership that will accept American terms. The White House has been consistent in this framing throughout the week, dismissing calls for restraint and de-escalation as the counsel of weakness. The defense secretary has confirmed that the campaign is about to intensify. The IDF chief has promised additional surprises.
The defining test of Trump’s second term is now joined. The outcome will be determined not in the next few days but over weeks and months that will test the staying power of American military commitment, the resilience of Iran’s government, and the capacity of the world’s financial and energy systems to absorb an extended conflict in the Middle East. Trump has made his bet. The only question now is how the dice fall.
