President Donald Trump has voiced strong criticism of the current dynamics within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), describing the U.S. involvement as “one-sided” and lacking reciprocity. This comes as NATO prepares for its upcoming summit in Ankara. Trump’s comments, shared on social media, emphasize his dissatisfaction with what he perceives as an unfair burden placed on the United States, particularly in light of some NATO allies’ lack of support during the recent conflict with Iran.
Trump has consistently called on European members of NATO to take on more responsibility for their own defense. His administration has already begun scaling back certain defense commitments in Europe, reflecting the president’s stance on the issue. This long-standing concern is expected to be a focal point during the discussions at the summit.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has acknowledged these growing tensions within the alliance, echoing Trump’s frustration over the perceived inadequate response from some NATO countries to U.S. military actions in the Middle East. Rubio indicated that these concerns would likely be a significant topic when NATO leaders meet.
The summit in Ankara, scheduled for July 7–8, will gather leaders from all 32 NATO member countries. The agenda includes discussions on defense cooperation, security challenges, and future commitments, with the U.S. push for a more balanced distribution of defense responsibilities expected to be a key issue.
