New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has admitted that the city lacks the legal capacity to detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he comes to the United States later this year. In a social media video, Mamdani revealed that his administration had explored all legal avenues concerning the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against Netanyahu, concluding that New York City does not have the authority to enforce it.
Despite this limitation, Mamdani urged the federal government to acknowledge the ICC warrant and take necessary action. He labeled Netanyahu a war criminal and declared that neither the Israeli leader nor anyone else facing similar allegations would be welcomed in New York City. Netanyahu is anticipated to visit the city in September for the United Nations General Assembly. Throughout his mayoral campaign, Mamdani had promised to investigate how the city could enforce the ICC warrant should Netanyahu enter New York.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024 due to alleged war crimes. However, the United States does not acknowledge the court’s jurisdiction and is not a member of the ICC. Amid the controversy, US President Donald Trump criticized Mamdani’s statements, asserting that Netanyahu would not be arrested on American soil and defending the actions of the Israeli leader.
Netanyahu, in response to the situation, has dismissed the uproar, expressing no concern over the mayor’s comments.
